Georgia schools have continued to struggle with chronic absenteeism post-pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. In an effort to address this, the Georgia Department of Education launched statewide efforts including a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness initiative, and specific assistance for high-need districts to improve attendance rates.
In 2025, Georgia passed updated school attendance legislation preventing expulsions based solely on absenteeism. The law added new rules for reporting absences and strengthened programs that support students completing graduation through alternative means.
By 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio stood at about 14:1, outperforming the national average of 15:1.
