In the 2024-25 school year, Sumter County Intermediate School counted 539 African American students, representing an 8% decline compared to the previous year, reports from the Georgia Department of Education show.

For the same period, total enrollment at Sumter County Intermediate School was 729 students. African American students made up 74% of the student body, the largest demographic group at the school.

Located in the Sumter County School District, the school’s district office is based in Americus.

Among Sumter County School District’s five schools, Sumter County High School had the largest number of African American students in the 2024-25 school year, with 762 enrolled.

The National Center for Education Statistics indicated that the racial and ethnic distribution among Georgia’s public school students was approximately 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander.

Chronic absenteeism persists as a significant challenge in Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more of the school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. As a response, GaDOE launched a statewide initiative featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign, and targeted support for high-need districts to improve daily attendance rates.

In 2025, Georgia legislators updated school attendance laws to prohibit expulsion solely for excessive absences. The new law also introduces added reporting requirements and supports programs enabling students to earn diplomas through alternative pathways.

By 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was about 14:1, which is more favorable than the national average of 15:1.
