Chronic absenteeism continues to be a wide-ranging issue in Georgia following the pandemic. For 2024, 20.7% of students missed 10% or more of school days, based on Georgia Department of Education numbers. In its response, the department launched new efforts statewide, including a live attendance dashboard, enhanced public outreach, and focused support for districts with the greatest needs to promote better daily attendance levels.
Georgia legislators enacted new attendance rules in 2025, which prohibit schools from expelling students solely for absences. This legislation also requires expanded reporting and provides pathways to obtain diplomas through alternative programs.
By 2026, Georgia had an average student-teacher ratio of about 14:1, an improvement compared to the nationwide ratio of 15:1.
