Reco

On Friday, April 22, Columbus State University honored more than 100 of its outstanding students and faculty at its annual Scholastic Honors Convocation. Chief among those recognitions are the university’s Educator of the Year and Faculty Cup award recipients.

This year’s Educator of the Year award recipient is Dr. Jordan Brasher, an assistant professor of geography in the College of Letters and Sciences’ Department of History & Geography. Since joining the CSU faculty in 2020, Brasher has instructed courses focusing on world regional geography and introductory, intermediate and advanced courses in geographic information systems (GIS). He also oversees the GIS Certificate Program and is a research fellow with Tourism RESET, a multi-university interdisciplinary initiative to identify, study and challenge inequality in the tourism industry. His research focuses on the memorialization of slavery and settler colonialism in the Americas, especially in the United States and Brazil. His work has appeared in numerous peer-reviewed journals and news outlets.

The Educator of the Year Award is presented by the Student Government Association to recognize and promote teaching excellence among the faculty of the university. Faculty are nominated by students and evaluated on the basis of knowledge, consistency, dependability and creativity. The annual award includes an Educator of the Year Medallion and a monetary award of $1,500.

This year’s Faculty Cup honoree is Sophia Brown, a senior scheduled to graduate in May with a bachelor of arts degree in history, minors in political science and sociology, and a certificate in international studies. Poised to graduate with a 4.0 grade point average, she is a member of CSU’s Honor College and multiple honor societies, and has received numerous awards and scholarships for her research in the fields in social sciences and humanities. Brown is active in several campus organizations, and founded the student organization Cougars for Autonomy and Agency for All People, which works for universal social justice.

The Faculty Cup is the highest award presented annually to a Columbus State University student and signifies superior academic achievement, participation in university organizations, leadership, service to others and a potential for future achievements. Nominations are made by the faculty, and the winner is selected by CSU’s Scholastic Honors Committee. The award is accompanied by a monetary award of $1,000.
