On June 8, 2022, Crisp County lost a hero. Today, we want to take a moment to reflect on the lasting legacy of Mr. M. R. Williams, Jr.
Mr. Morris Randolph Williams, Jr. dedicated his life to serving others. He was a United States Army Veteran and a retired Policeman for the City of Cordele. Mr. M.R. Williams started with the Cordele Police Department in July of 1963. He served as one of the first African American law enforcement officers on the Cordele Police force. An article from the local dispatch describes Mr. M. R. Williams, Jr. as a “HEROIC OFFICER- Cordele policeman M.R. Williams has been credited by police Sgt. Hiram Watson with “saving my life.” Williams came to Watson’s aid as the veteran sergeant was scuffling with one of three Louisiana gunmen early Thursday morning. Williams, who suffered a shoulder wound in a shootout with the gunman, is listed in good condition at Crisp County Hospital.” (By Harvey Simpson) We will not forget his loyalty to the badge and the community he served. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. M.R. Williams, Jr.
