Remembering Tropical Storm Alberto June 30th- July 8th, 1994This year marks the 28th Anniversary of the flood of 1994 caused by Tropical Storm Alberto. Tropical Storm Alberto began as a tropical depression southeast of Cuba during the last week of June. When the storm moved into Georgia, it stalled for a day after reaching the Atlanta area. The flood of 1994 left a mark on Crisp County. On July 7th, the Sheriff issued an evacuation order for those north of Hwy 280. On July 8th, the Sheriff issued an evacuation order to include all areas south of Hwy 280. On July 9th at 5:30 A.M., the Crisp Power dam was breached. The flood of 1994, like all disasters, was a teaching tool. Crisp County first responders laid a foundation for disaster response efforts during the flood, and we continue to build on those principles of teamwork today.
