CSU Alum Scott Introduces “Kimtober” to Support Teacher Education

CSU Alum Scott Introduces “Kimtober” to support teacher educationA devoted Muscogee County School District educator and dedicated two-time Columbus State University alumna, Dr. Kimberly M. Scott has been celebrating her October birthday with a month-long fundraising challenge to CSU alumni and friends. “Kimtober,” as she has coined it, is raising support for the Dr. Kimberly M. Scott Teacher Education Scholarship Endowment to help support aspiring educators and servant leaders.

“Dr. Scott takes pride in being a CSU alumna because the university helped her to become the servant leader she is today by presenting her with many opportunities to serve in leadership roles,” said Katie Evans, executive director of CSU’s Alumni Association.

Scott’s “Kimtober” effort includes an online giving site established in conjunction with CSU’s Office of University Advancement, where fellow alumni, friends and those wishing to support the scholarship endowment can make an online, tax-deductible gift to Columbus State. She has even created a “Kimtober” e-newsletter to keep her friends, fellow alumni and donors updated on her progress.

“After fulfilling my pledge in 2020 for the Dr. Kimberly M. Scott Study Room in Frank D. Brown Hall, I started the Dr. Kimberly M. Scott Scholarship Endowment Fund,” she explained. “I learned of naming opportunities as a member of the College of Education and Health Professions Advisory Board, and about scholarship endowments as a member of the CSU Alumni Association. I thought both would be a fitting way for me to support my alma mater while leaving my mark and legacy.”

Prior to her time at Columbus State, Scott served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Navy Reserve. She received her bachelor’s degree in 2001 and her master’s in 2002 from CSU—both in education. As a student, she was involved in extracurricular campus activities, including serving as an orientation leader, a chapter and executive board member of CSU’s Eta Iota Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., a charter member of the CSU National Pan-Hellenic Council, the Student Government Association’svice president of scholastic affairs, and a Greek Life graduate assistant. She was recognized as the Eta Iota Chapter Sorority Sister of the Year in 2000.

In her alumni life, Scott served on the CSU Alumni Association Board of Directors for a number of years—including a term as its president—and as a member of the College of Education and Health Professions Advisory Panel. She is also a founding member of the CSU Black Alumni Council, which was established in 2019. Because of her consistent commitment to CSU, she was awarded the CSU Alumni Achievement Award during the Legacy Banquet in 2015.

Scott has been an educator with the Muscogee County School District for more than 20 years and currently works as a media specialist at Columbus High School. She was named the Muscogee County School District and West Central Georgia Region's Library Media Specialist of the Year in 2018 and was inducted into the Columbus State University College of Education and Health Professions Hall of Fame in 2019.

To be eligible for the Dr. Kimberly M. Scott Teacher Education Scholarship Endowment, students must be juniors or seniors in good academic standing and accepted into Columbus State University’s teacher education program. Priority will be given to students who are members of a National Pan-Hellenic Council Sorority or Fraternity with strong school or community service records, and preference will be given to applicants who are military veterans or children or grandchildren of current military service members or veterans.

Each year, more than 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students benefit from university scholarships totaling more than $3 million. Typical scholarship awards range in value from $100 to $5,000 in academic year support and include both merit- and need-based opportunities.

“Each of Columbus State’s scholarship awards is made possible by our generous donors who understand the value a scholarship represents in making college affordable and equipping students to achieve their goals,” said Dr. Rocky Kettering, CFRE, CSU’s vice president for university advancement and executive director of the CSU Foundation.

Current and admitted students can view and apply for CSU scholarships on the university’s online scholarship portal. Alumni and friends can learn more about establishing a scholarship endowment at Columbus State on the Office of University Advancement’s website.

Those wishing to make a gift to the Dr. Kimberly M. Scott Scholarship Endowment Fund can do so online.
