ALBANY, GA – On May 2, 2023, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) hosted a reception at the Albany Museum of Art to celebrate the participants in the 2023 Congressional Art Competition from Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District. The annual competition for high school students has taken place for over four decades.

“We all know the important role that art plays in the life of our community. It can be a means for individual expression, or to tell a story. It can encourage us to see things from a different perspective and even become a unique and definitive part of a community’s culture,” said Congressman Bishop. “We are fortunate to have had so many students participate in this competition. I want to thank our schools, art faculties, community art organizations, museums, parents who all play such an important role in our students lives and helped make this event a success.”

This year’s winners were:

  • First place to Kelon Vaughan for his work in graphite entitled “Southern Gothic circa 1884”

(11th grade, Thomasville High School Scholars Academy, Thomasville, GA)

  • Second place to Chancie Brown for his work in graphite entitled “The Guys”

(11th grade, Dougherty High School, Albany, GA)

  • Third place to Madelin Vasquez for her work in mixed media entitled “The Agony”

(11th grade, Dougherty High School, Albany, GA)

  • Honorable Mention to Ella Kate Carroll for her work in acrylic entitled “Elevator Jazz”

(10th grade, Thomasville High School Scholars Academy, Thomasville, GA)

During the ceremony, Congressman Bishop thanked the competition judges – Jim Hendricks, Jeaunice Burnette, Chloe Hinton, and Jermaine Dupree – as well as Andrew Wulf, Executive Director of the Albany Museum of Art which has been supportive of the competition and its student artists.
