Total enrollment at the middle school reached 562 students in 2024-25. White students represented 7% of the population, making them the school’s second-smallest demographic group.
Sumter County Middle School is part of Sumter County School District, which has its central office located in Americus.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, Georgia’s public school population was about 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander.
Chronic absenteeism has been a persistent concern in Georgia schools since the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reports. The department started a statewide program with a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign and focused support for high-need districts to strengthen daily attendance.
Beginning in 2025, state lawmakers revised attendance legislation to prohibit expelling students solely due to absences. The updated law also requires new reporting measures and aligns with initiatives for students to earn diplomas via alternative options.
As of 2026, Georgia reported an average student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1, outperforming the national ratio of 15:1.
